There it is, sitting in my living room, a big comfy couch. It often calls to me, in a subtle way. With those big soft pillows and cool leather it is always inviting me to sit down, take a load off, relax and enjoy the moment.
I wonder how I got along without a big comfy couch. I’ve had smaller, harder and not so comfortable seating in that same room. That was a mistake that perpetuated for too long. Not having a suitable place to kick back is a bad thing. You need to have at least one special spot, with a piece of furniture that not only appeals to your eyes, but to your behind as well.
If you visit a furniture store to try out a few, you realize how different the supposed big and comfy couches really are. Many are big enough, but some are not comfy at all. These appeal to people who like to sit up straight, uptight folks who want their homes in a certain order where everything is stiff, but correct.
Then there are those couches that are just too soft, a bit too big and maybe even too comfy. These never allow you to really sit at all, only to lie down or get sucked into the back pillows so that it makes it hard to stand up later.
I prefer the middle; a big comfy couch with a little support for my back, and yet soft enough to make me want to stay on it for long periods of time. Add the enjoyment of a good book, a magazine, some tea or coffee, and maybe music or TV, it all is better when done while on this big comfy couch.
What of the design, the color, the materials? I personally prefer leather. Not that I would be unhappy with some nice fabric, but leather seems to age well, getting softer as time goes on, and requiring little to keep it looking good.
I hope not to get old enough to want one of those flower covered affairs with a doily on each one of the arms. If that happens I know it won’t be a big comfy couch at all, it will be my grandmother’s sofa coming back to haunt me.
